Top Care – Where better care has a home

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a service that helps NDIS participants live more independently while receiving the support they need in their daily lives. SIL is not about specialised housing—it focuses on providing the right level of assistance to help you manage everyday tasks, whether you live in shared accommodation or your own home.

SIL allows you to remain part of your community while accessing the support needed to achieve your personal goals. The level of support is tailored to your individual needs and may include personal care, household tasks, medication assistance, social and emotional support, transport, and community access.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL support is delivered in your home. You may live on your own, with family, or in a shared arrangement with other NDIS participants. The focus is on creating a comfortable and supportive environment where you can live as independently as possible.

Support is available for everyday activities such as personal care, meal preparation, and managing household tasks. Assistance can also extend beyond the home, including help with attending appointments, participating in social activities, or using public transport.

Depending on your needs, SIL can include 24/7 support, including overnight assistance, to ensure you have access to care at all times.

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is designed for NDIS participants with high support needs or significant functional impairments. Unlike SIL, SDA is not about providing support services—it focuses on offering purpose-built housing that is designed for accessibility, safety, and long-term living.

SDA ensures that individuals with complex needs have access to homes that are specifically designed to support their daily living requirements.

What to expect from SDA Accommodation?

SDA provides housing that is specifically designed for people with higher support needs. These homes include features such as wheelchair accessibility, assistive technology, and modifications that make everyday living safer and more manageable.

SDA accommodation allows you to live more independently, although in some cases it may involve shared living with a small number of other residents.

It’s important to note that SDA does not include support services. These are provided separately through Supported Independent Living (SIL) or other NDIS funding arrangements.

Key Differences Between SIL and SDA

While both SIL and SDA support independent living, they serve different purposes and are designed for participants with different needs:

Which is right for you

Choosing between SIL and SDA depends on your individual needs, goals, and level of independence, as well as your eligibility under NDIS guidelines.

SIL may be the right option if you want to live independently—either on your own or in shared accommodation—while receiving support with daily tasks. It is ideal for those who value community living and are working towards greater independence.

SDA is more suitable for individuals with higher or more complex needs who require specialised housing features. If you need a highly accessible environment, ongoing assistance, or have significant physical challenges, SDA may be the better option.

Understanding your needs and speaking with your support coordinator can help determine the most appropriate pathway.
